iPhone or Android speaker not working? No sound fixes that actually help

Most silent speakers are a setting, not a broken part. Turn off Silent mode and Do Not Disturb, raise the volume while something is playing, and turn Bluetooth off for a minute. Then test the speaker on its own: on iPhone, drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. If you hear nothing, or the sound is quiet or muffled, take off the case, check the grille for lint or water, restart and update. Still silent, or distorted at every volume? The speaker probably needs service.

Silent, quiet or muffled: what you hear tells you where to look

Speaker problems come in three flavors, and each one points somewhere different. Complete silence in every app usually means a setting or a device that took over the audio. A speaker that still works but sounds quiet or muffled is usually blocked by a case, lint or water. Sound that is rough, buzzing or distorted at every volume is more often damage.

Notice which speaker is affected, too. The earpiece at the top is the one you hear on calls; the loudspeaker on the bottom edge plays ringtones, videos and speakerphone. A quick free speaker test plays a tone through the left and right channels separately, so you can hear which side is missing.

Check the settings that silence the speaker

Go through these before you assume anything is broken. They take a minute, and they are the first steps in both Apple's and Samsung's own checklists.

  • Silent mode. On an iPhone with a Ring/Silent switch, move it toward the screen so no orange shows. On models with an Action button, press it if it is set to Silent, or check in Control Center.
  • Volume. Press a volume button while a video or song is playing. The ringer and the media volume are separate, so a loud ringtone does not mean videos are turned up.
  • Do Not Disturb and Focus. On iPhone, open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and make sure it is off. On Samsung Galaxy phones it is in Settings > Notifications.
  • Bluetooth. Earbuds in a case, a car or a speaker in the next room can quietly grab the audio. Turn Bluetooth off for a minute and play the sound again.
  • Android sound settings. On Galaxy phones, also open Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements: Mute all sounds should be off and the left/right sound balance centered.

Test the speaker on its own

On iPhone, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth a few times. That plays a sound straight through the loudspeaker, bypassing apps. Apple says that if you hear nothing, or the speaker button on that slider is dimmed, the speaker might need service.

Next, make a call with speakerphone on. If calls sound bad but everything else is fine, the problem may be the network or reception rather than the speaker. Try again later or from another place.

On Android, play two or three videos or songs from different apps. Google notes that if only some sounds are distorted, the files themselves may be the problem. For a cleaner check on either platform, run the speaker test: a sweep from low to high pitch makes holes and rattles easy to hear, which music tends to hide.

Clear what covers the grille

Take off the case and any screen protector or film. A protector that overlaps the earpiece slot can make calls quiet on its own, and a deep case cutout packs pocket lint back against the bottom grille.

Then look at both openings under a bright light. If you see dust or lint, Apple's advice is a small, soft-bristled brush that is clean and dry. Our guide on how to clean a phone speaker safely covers the full method and what never to push into the holes.

If the phone got wet

A speaker that turned quiet or muffled right after rain, a shower or a spill usually has water sitting in the mesh. It often clears as the phone dries. To speed that up, play a water eject sound with the grille facing down, then test again. The full routine is in how to get water out of a phone speaker.

The Wring app puts Water Eject, Dust Clean and a Speaker Test in one place, and on compatible phones it can test the top and bottom speakers separately. It is free with ads and usage limits, and Pro removes both. Sound can only move droplets near the grille; it cannot dry liquid inside the phone or repair a damaged speaker.

Restart, update and rule out apps

Restart the phone. Google and Samsung both list a restart for sound problems, and it clears a stuck audio route after a call or a Bluetooth session.

Install the latest system update. Samsung lists it as a step for speaker and sound problems on Galaxy phones.

On a Galaxy phone you can also start in Safe mode and play audio. If the sound works there, an app you installed recently is the likely cause. Remove recent apps one at a time and test after each, then restart normally.

What not to do

Most extra damage happens while trying to fix the problem quickly.

  • Don't push pins, toothpicks or SIM tools into the grille. They can puncture the mesh and the membrane behind it.
  • Don't use canned compressed air. It can drive dirt deeper and strain the speaker.
  • Don't heat the phone with a hair dryer or put it on a radiator. Heat can soften the adhesives that keep it sealed.
  • Don't bury a wet phone in rice. It does not dry it faster; see the rice myth, tested.
  • Don't charge a phone that you think has liquid inside.

When the speaker needs repair

Book service if the speaker is still silent after the settings checks, if the Ringtone and Alerts slider makes no sound or is dimmed, if the sound is distorted at every volume, or if the problem started after a drop. The same goes for a phone that got salt water or a sugary drink inside: the residue keeps causing trouble after it dries.

Apple, Samsung and Google all end in the same place: if nothing above helps, contact support or a service center. Samsung lists resetting all settings as the last software step before that, so back up first.

Quick answers

Why is there no sound on my iPhone but headphones work? Audio is reaching the phone, so check Silent mode, the volume and Bluetooth first, then test the speaker with the Ringtone and Alerts slider. If headphones work and the slider is silent, the loudspeaker itself may need service.

Why can I only hear calls on speakerphone? The earpiece at the top is blocked or failing. Remove the screen protector and gently brush the earpiece slot. If that does not help, get it checked.

Why is my iPhone speaker so quiet? Usually lint in the grille, a case or film over the opening, or water after a splash. Test, clean and test again.

Can a sound fix a broken speaker? No. A sound can shake loose water droplets or light dust at the grille. It cannot repair a damaged speaker.
